Gangivecchio is home to Horticulturist Dr. Charles Sacamano. Dr. Sacamano is a Professor Emeritus of Plant Sciences at the Univesity of Arizona and former Director of Ecology for the 2000+ acre El Tamarindo golf resort and nature preserve in Mexico. Together with his wife Shirley, Dr. Sacamano posts frequent updates on the flora and fauna of Gangivecchio and the surrounding countryside on Gangivecchio's NATURE blog.
Dr. and Mrs. Sacamano also conduct Plant Walks and Nature Hikes for small groups of Gangivecchio guests. A typical walk includes opportunities to see and learn about wildflowers, terrestrial orchids and native trees and shrubs as well as traditional Mediterranean garden plants.
Gangivecchio's one-kilometer long nature trail is known as "Il Sentiero Dell'Alloro" (The Laurel Trail). The trail follows a clear, spring-fed stream through woodlands rich in native plant species. It is a perfect place to experience something of Sicily's complex natural hertiage, do a bit of bird watching, and enjoy nature in a tranquil sanctuary of great beauty. Guided tours are available.
